Bored with beige? Had it with heather gray? Fortunately, the wish to add color to an interior space is one of life’s problems that can be solved with a little bit of bravery and a dollop of inspiration. Now, don’t get us wrong. While we love the sophistication of neutral color palettes, it can fall a little boring sometimes. When you’re first considering adding pops of color to a mostly neutral interior, it’s easy to feel a bit intimidated. What follows are some beginner tips (Color 101, if you will) to help you start to color your world.

1. Start Small

If you’re just dipping your toe into the color pool, start small. Try painting the trim on a favorite piece of furniture, incorporating a hot orange vase or a chartreuse picture frame. Even something as simple as a solid-colored figurine can be a good tester to decide what color scheme you want to pursue. If you’re starting will an all-neutral interior, one or two pops of a single shade can really add that designer touch.

2. Go Floral

Flowers are a great, low commitment way to discover what colors look great in your neutral space. Choose a bouquet in a single color (or two colors) to get started. How do deep fuchsia dahlias look next to your oatmeal tweed sofa? If the effect is pleasing, think about adding some throw pillows in in a range of pinks and fuchsias. Experiment with floral arrangements until you’re confident about adding a more permanent pop.

3. Try Out One Larger Item

A single, brightly colored item can take any room from so-so to sensational. Consider a yellow upholstered couch in the midst of room done in browns, or if a piece of furniture is too big of a leap, paint a coffee table or credenza you already own with a bright shade. Live with your new addition for awhile, and see if you can echo Color Pop #1 with another piece of furniture or an accessory.

4. The Art of Color

Anyone will agree that art is an important part of decorating your home. Use it to set a mood or add an interesting accent to the space. Finding dynamic, colorful pieces that you love will help you differentiate the look of your space. Create a full gallery wall and mix-and-match pieces from your favorite artists, or go for a single statement piece. Paintings and prints can easily be moved, so you’re free to try out new spaces or switch them out with the seasons.

5. Think Textile

Throws, pillows, wall hangings and rugs, are all an easy way to add color to your space. With so many different styles and textures to choose from, you can go as light or bright as your heart desires. If you’re looking to create a more luxurious vibe, opt for some jewel tones in soft velvets to take your room to the next level. Colorful accent pillows on a neutral sofa, bed, or lounge chair can turn a basic piece into a stylish focal point.

6. For the Floor

When choosing to add color, don’t forget about the floor. Whether you have natural hardwood floors or wall-to-wall carpeting, they don’t ever have to be a completely solid slate. For those with commitment phobia, try a rug for an easy-to-change solution. And if you’re feeling a little extra confident, experiment with layered rugs in varying textures for a unique look.

7. Accent It

Now that you’ve flirted with splashes of color in your decorative items, why not embrace your space and go bold with accent paint. Whether you’re into a windowsill detail or an accent wall, ceiling, or floor, don’t be afraid to try it, especially in the kitchen. Want to implement one of the hottest color trends? Paint your kitchen an unforgettable shade of yellow.
