Desk has oak and pine secondary wood. Desk was made probably 1720-1740. The drawer bottoms run front to back like they did on 17th century pieces. The desk interior has a well like 17th century desks. The stepped interior drawers are below the cubby holes as normally found on desks before 1770. So when you look at the desk closed the top drawer is false then 2 half drawers and 2 full width drawers. The stepped interior is old possibly original dry finish. You have the sliding part of the writing surface to allow access to the well. There is 1 drawer over the cubbies on each side using the valance as the drawer front. The columns on either side of the prospect door do open and this took a little time to figure out. When you open the prospect door there is a little "hole" on either side with a thin blade from a screw driver of something you need to depress wooden "spring" to unlock the columns. The hole on the left side is larger I think from a previous owner. You can see the wooden "spring" on the side of the columned drawers in the photos. You may notice the cubby on the extreme right is missing its valance. I will have this taken care of. Update this has been taken care of. There is also the bottom tip of the valanced drawer on the left side that is repaired and can be seen in the photos. An interesting interior with lots of surprises. These hidden drawers are roughly 300 years old so they dont slide like a new piece of furniture just so you are aware. The finish on the outside of the desk is an old refinish or clean and polish. A good antique desk in good condition. Desk is 36" wide and 21" deep and stands 42" tall. The writing height is roughly 30 3/4". less
