After an apprenticeship as a draftsman and lithographer from 1948 to 1952, Brodwolf traveled to Paris in 1953, where he made his first self-taught painting attempts and established his first contacts with the Informel. In 1954 Brodwolf settled in Brienz and worked first as a graphic artist and later as a restorer of medieval frescoes. Since 1956 he has worked mainly as a glass painter. All these experiences are reflected in his drawings, paintings and sculptures. Since 1959, the figure has dominated Brodwolf's work, becoming the characteristic identifying feature of his works. This year saw his discovery of the so-called tube figure, squeezed tubes with remnants of paint and labeling, which he reshaped into figures. It appears in countless variations, first in his drawings, in the early 1970s in his sculptures, and since 1975 in his object paintings. In his works, Brodwolf plays with various, often unconventional materials, which, when combined with the figure, are given a new context. Brodwolf's artistic success can be seen in the numerous exhibitions and awards that have accompanied his work since the 1970s. In 1976 he accepted a call to the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim and in 1982 was appointed professor of sculpture at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. Through his intensive examination of the human figure and the relationship between art and everyday objects, Brodwolf had a lasting influence on his students and colleagues.
