Social media, news outlets, and the pressure of keeping up with the Joneses drive individuals to try any tactic to stand out from the crowd. From “stand up and be counted” to Warhol’s famous 15 minutes of fame, it has become hard to weed out the noise from the essential. A desire to be heard in the face of injustice, a need to be seen as better than, or an ingrained entitlement are all driving forces and inspiration for this series.

I create these pieces with acrylic paint on a 3/8-inch-thick primed wood panel. The intimacy of the one-foot square space combined with the mark-making that I have developed over the years allows me to express the desired emotions. Strong pigments applied as glazes give the colors a luminous look-at-me surface.
