Signed lower right, 'Earl Thollander' (American, 1923-2001) and painted circa 1955; additionally signed, verso, on paper and titled, 'The Harmonica Player' with artist San Francisco address.
Displayed in the original, white-painted, wood frame.
Framed dimensions: 16 H x 7.5 W x 1.5 D inches.
A powerful, character-driven study of a rough-hewn and seasoned character, shown colorfully dressed and holding a chrome harmonica by his side.
Born in Kingsburg, California, Thollander was raised in San Francisco and first attended City College. He subsequently attended the University of California at Berkeley for a year and a half where he studied under Eugen Neuhaus and John Haley. His studies interrupted by World War II, Thollander served with the U.S. Navy, graduating from the Naval Academy as an officer assigned to a landing ship that traveled throughout the South Pacific. In his free time, he continued to sketch and paint the scenes and events around him. Following the war, he returned to his hometown of San Francisco. Under the G.I. Bill, he attended the San Francisco Art Institute and the Academy of Art, studying with many well-known artists of his day including Richard Diebenkorn.
In 1947, Earl married Janet Behr, his sweetheart from San Francisco. In order to provide for his family, he went to work as an apprentice illustrator for Patterson & Hall, a service furnishing art to advertising agencies. From there, he moved to the San Francisco Examiner as a staff artist and Landphere & Associates advertising agency as an illustrator. During this time, Thollander continued his work as a fine artist in the studio he built at the top of his Moraga Street house. In 1960, Thollander became a freelance artist and worked on commercial assignments for companies nationwide.
Later on, many of his trips were funded by a San Francisco based travel agency who, realizing his talents not only as an artist but as a group leader, sponsored his travel by having him lead other aspiring artists to the “backroads” of foreign lands. In all, Earl visited and drew in over 71 countries around the globe. The sketches from these trips would later inspire paintings done in his studio at home. He also became well known for his American journeys through his original Sunset book 'The Backroads of California' and later on for his additional Backroads books which included travels through Oregon, Washington, Arizona, New England, Texas, and the Carolinas.
In 1964, Thollander and his family acquired a country home five miles outside the Napa Valley town of Calistoga. This became their permanent home in 1969.
During his career, Thollander illustrated over 62 books and produced at least 60 one-man showings and participated in countless group and invitational shows. Earl remembered one of his teachers, Thomas Leighton, saying while twirling his giant red moustache, “If you can draw the figure, you can draw anything”.
The artist said:
“I am inspired and charmed by the life which surrounds me where I live. It could be an unusual sky of billowing clouds or bright sunlight shining through a break in them; fog’s mysterious blanket of softness, or mists rising in the bright sunshine following seasonal rains. Spider webs illuminated in the grasses by morning dew glinting in the early light of day, or does with their spring fawns grazing in the meadow below our house and gray squirrels leaping about bending down the tree branches; all inspire me to love life. To make pictures has been the joy of my life. I would gladly begin it all again.”
We are pleased to offer this charming work from the artist's San Francisco period which, happily, retains its original frame.
