ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY
Lars Swane (1913-2002) was a Danish painter and graphic artist. Swane was born into one of the country's most intense artistic environments. As the son of Sigurd Swane and Christine Swane, and with Johannes Larsen as maternal uncle, it was predictable that growing up was characterized by art and an interest in nature. At first Swane chose nature and took a forester's exam, but soon the artistic heritage took over and his passion became a combination of art and nature and interpretations of the reality around us. In Swane's landscape paintings, you can geographically follow his journey from the first years of painting in North Zealand to the mile-wide views from the high-lying Holtbjerg in Vendsyssel, from where he began painting during a summer stay in 1950. In 1962 the family moved to Holtbjerg. Then from the mid-1980s he lived a number of years in the quiet, flat North Funen coastal landscape around Bogense until 1992 when Swane returned to North Zealand and Copenhagen. With the landscapes as an eternal source of inspiration, both watercolor and oil paintings were completed during trips to Christiansfeld, Samsø, Bisserup Harbour, and wherever the caravan was parked. Swane has painted everywhere in Denmark, but has a particular fondness for the coasts and the quiet atmospheres around the dinghies and boat bridges. In addition to landscapes, Swane has mainly painted interiors and installations, whereas very few portraits and figures have been produced. From the 1960s onward, flower arrangements in front of windows with landscape views have been a favorite motif for both Swane and his collectors. The characteristic combination of schematically reproduced landscapes, organic floral arrangements and the geometry of the windows has, with lithography as a medium, become a feature in thousands of Danish homes. Swane's first works from the 1930s are dominated by a strict simplification of the motifs with an emphasis on composition and well-defined color surfaces. In the 1940s, a more colouristic concrete style emerged, with free compositions and wider brush strokes. The colors are now occasionally applied in pastel-thin layers, reminiscent of the mother's art. A number of watercolor works from these years are distinguished both by the fine perspective and by a characteristic red-brown base tone. During the 1960s, the images become more precise and detailed depictions of the landscape, with a secure perspective and a simplified approach to composition. At the same time, a glossy, sometimes almost mirror-gloss tone emerges in the compositions and in some of the landscapes, especially the coastal motifs. Swane is deeply fascinated by the nature of the reflections, as they, as reflections of the painting's motif, are in a certain way more real than the motif itself. With the ability to convey the immediate joy of experiencing the landscape and plant growth, especially the flowers, Swane has been a natural artistic collaboration partner for various environmental organizations.
Swane's exhibitions included KE 1937-41, 1944; Drawing department, Ole Haslund, Kbh. 1940; The Bully Flower 1942-50; The Twelve 1944; The Union 1947; Grønningen 1952-54, 1956-57; Charl.borg 1952; With Dannebrogen at the top, Liljevalchs Konsthall, Sth. 1961; Whitsun exhibition, Engelsholm Castle 1964; Nordjyderne, Nikolaj, Kbh. 1980; Workshop exhibition, Hjørring Kunstmus. 1986; Salt 1988-93.
