Drawing by Charles-Henri Pille known as Henri Pille "L'Atelier d'artiste", pen drawing on paper. In an interior with Renaissance furniture, a painter rummages in a large Renaissance sculpted chest, while his model standing in front of a table waits for the last elements of her costume to be brought to her.
Charles Henri Pille (1844-1897) is a French painter and illustrator. A pupil of Félix-Joseph Barrias, Henri Pille sent his first painting to the Salon of 1865. In 1869, he received the Gold Medal from the Ministry of the House of the Emperor and the Fine Arts. He was awarded a Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. A popular figure in the Montmartre artistic Community, his work developed through history paintings and genre scenes often tinged with humor. He is especially famous as a pen designer. He performs numerous illustrations for publishing, in particular for the publisher Alphonse Lemerre, and contributes to magazines and newspapers such as Le Courrier Français, Le Rire, Le Monde Illustré, Le Procope, spoken newspaper, Le Journal Amusant, La Vie modern, Le Voleur, the Revue Illustrée or Le Petit Français illustrated. He published drawings in the cabaret review Le Chat Noir, for which he provided the illustration for the title, and participated in the design of silhouettes for the shows in his shadow theater.In his letters to his brother Theo, Vincent van Gogh expressed his admiration several times for the work of Henri Pille, whom he met during his stay in Paris between May 1875 and March 1876. Henri Pille was appointed knight of the Legion of Honor in 1882. He was president of the Society of artists illustrators.
Some of his works are kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice, the Carnavalet museum, the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay \.
