It is an oil on canvas work, executed on commission, in the late 1800s, presumably around 1870/80.
The person portrayed is the wife of Carlo Ceroni, who emigrated from Val Solda with other of his villagers, including the poet-writer Antonio Fogazzaro, who settled in Vicenza.
Carlo Ceroni, who arrived as a bricklayer, made his fortune and became a building contractor. This fortune also allowed him to have himself portrayed, as well as his wife and thus pass on their image to posterity.

P.S.: The information given here was kindly granted by Ms. Cristiana Bevilacqua, wife of gallery owner Giulio Bertoldo, who died in Vicenza on 05/11/1996, a relative of Ceroni himself (his great-grandfather).

The frame was made of carved wood with 22 Kti pure gold leaf gilding, of which the maker Valeriano Bertolini stamped the mark. On the label is indicated the technique of gold leaf application according to the method of the Antica Scula dei Doratori Veneti. See less
