His paintings are characterized by strong colors rendered with broad textural brush strokes. This portrait of a young officer is a perfect example. Vigano disregards the formality of symmetry and fine, realistic brushstrokes normally used in portraits of this time for a heavier touch with both paint and brush to create an intriguing contrast of subject and style.
