Gladding McBean tiles were designed for large buildings starting in late 1883 and by 1926, and through the 1930s they … more Gladding McBean tiles were designed for large buildings starting in late 1883 and by 1926, and through the 1930s they saw their heyday of tile use, from clay sewer pipes to architectural moldings. Charles Gladding and Peter McGill McBean acquired the Northern Clay company and became one of the largest tile producers for large buildings from Chicago to California designing and creating tile moldings, balustrades, overdoors, and frieze moldings for public and private buildings. Unfortunately, many of these buildings have been demolished for new buildings to go up and although several buildings have been conserved and the Gladding McBean tiles have been restored, some of the tiles from the older buildings that have been torn down survive with collectors. Such is the case with this tile, it was saved and sold to a tile dealer and then went into a private collection. You can see the remainders of the concrete mortar used to hold the tile in place at one time. What building did this tile come from? Who knows, most of the times that a building was demolished the "debris" was just hauled away and the old tiles went with the debris and any information about them has been lost through time. Not all tiles produced by Gladding McBean have distinguishing marks or makers marks, especially the tiles used on large buildings. This is one such example. You can still visit the Gladding McBean factory located in Lincoln, California the tours require reservations and usually occur between April and May each year. The last 3 photos are some different examples of tile products produced by Gladding McBean including an overdoor used on the RCA building. This tile is square and measures approximately 7 1/2" wide X 4" deep X 7 1/2" high. less
