Claude Michel … Read more Bronze group with brown patina, entitled "L'enfance de Silène", signed Clodion and annotated Cresson Éditeur on the terrace. Claude Michel (1738-1814), known as Clodion, was a sculptor from Lorraine, a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, who was known to have received numerous awards for his mythological and allegorical work.
"The Childhood of Silenus" depicts a young satyr in human form, his pan flute slung over his shoulder, accompanied by a bacchante and two children, all dressed in drapery and animal skins. They dance, play the tambourine and wander around in a joyful atmosphere.
This group is fixed on a base of Italian cherry marble with a molded and beaded edge.
The whole rests on an oval base with a mahogany throat.
We will appreciate this work for its realism, its jovial spirit and its dimensionality.
