Tan with white, the jersey's of the … Read more Stunning rare pair of porcelain Waylande Gregory (1905 - 1971) Polo Player sculptures. Tan with white, the jersey's of the players are striped and polka dot. Mallets are wood, and likely not original. Both sculptures are signed. Acquired from the estate of Spencer Tracy's daughter, Susie Tracy.

Gregory is one of the most important ceramicists of the 1930s, known for his monumental ceramic sculptures - one of his most renowned was a multi-figured fountain created for the 1939 World's Fair. Studying under Lorado Taft (1860–1936), Gregory went on to create smaller porcelain sculptures which may have been Gregory’s greatest contribution to Art Deco. Gregory’s most popular porcelain figure was his Polo Player. This ultra Art Deco theme was inspired by the polo games at Schley field in Far Hills, New Jersey.
