This rare set of distinctive antique late 1800's Italian Renaissance Revival Lantern Floor Lamps are authentic and have the theatrical allure that they did in the late 1800's when they were produced. They seem to have a churchy look and feel to them and perhaps one of their duties was to keep an altar lit, but my research has concluded that they were employed heavily in other settings as well. A leading purpose was theaters - they were used on stage in case the house lights dimmed or went out altogether, the actors had some local light to read their lines by in case they forgot any. They were also frequently used in libraries, social lodges, courthouses and banks.

Condition- So many positives. Putting aside the drill holes, frayed wiring and one broken ( soon to be replaced ) window pane these Italian Renaissance Lantern Floor Lamps are in very good vintage condition. Above average for 130+ years old.
There is no separation of metals whatsoever- and it is obvious that the 2 types of metals chosen prevailed in their blending- Cast Bronze and Brass Repousse.
The hinges are strong, the latches are strong, the light sockets look clean and work in conjunction with the wiring. These weigh 9 lbs a piece so are not too hard to re-arrange in a room. I found no denting, no smoothing over and no replacement of the original embossed repousse artwork on the cast bronze. It is well defined. less

Final Markdown Condition: I have plugged these in once to show that they work, but I don't encourage anyone else to do the same until they have these lamps re-wired. The wire wrapping is frayed, the wiring itself is exposed in several places and the plug stoppers are long gone leaving more exposed wires. So we care about your safety. If these are bought to be displayed lighted and working, we recommend re-wiring first. Condition- So many positives.
