ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY:
Frans Timén is a visual artist, born January 6, 1883 in Gothenburg.
After matriculation in Vänersborg in 1903 and a few years of information service, he then studied from 1906-1907 at the Valand Art School in Gothenburg under Carl Wilhelmson. He has mostly painted landscapes from Bohuslän and Bergslagen in a monumental, synthesized naturalism. He placed great emphasis on intense lighting and a slightly cubed, rhythmic structure of form, while the color is ascetic and sparingly applied in patches. His art has its roots in the west coast depictions of the teacher Carl Wilhelmson and Karl Nordström.
During the Paris years, Timén was mostly captivated by the form-stabilizing painting of Cezanne and the Cubists. He took the motifs from Spain, Bohuslän, Västergötland and Bergslagen. It was mainly poor and stony areas he produced, often with large flower carpets of sedum and heather.
Exhibitions: Timén participated in 1906, 1908 and 1909 in the Gothenburg Art Association's exhibitions, as well as in 1909 in an exhibition in Hallin's art shop in Stockholm together with three other Valand students. It was Mollie Faustman, Carl Luthander and Gösta Törneqvist. In 1911-1912 he stayed in Paris and in the years 1920-1923 in Mallorca and on the Spanish east coast. He then lived in Stockholm and Finnerödja and, from 1936 until his death, in Örebro. He helped form the artist group Optimisterna and during the years 1926-1935 was represented at the group's exhibitions, of which the exhibitions in 1928 at Liljewalchs and 1930 at the Art Academy were particularly noted. He became a member of Färg och Form in 1948 and exhibited separately in the group's gallery in 1942, 1951 and 1957 and regularly participated in their collective exhibitions.
Timén is represented in the National Museum, the Modern Museum, the Gothenburg Art Museum and the Örebro County Museum, the museums in Örebro, Skövde, Östersund and Falun, as well as the Institut Tessin, Paris.
In 1949 Timén became a member of the Art Academy and in 1963 received Örebro County Council's first cultural scholarship and in 1967 received the Hjalmar Bergman prize.
Frans Timén passed away August 29, 1968 in Örebro Nikolai parish.
