Of swedish origin, pierre-harry mewesen obtained his master's degree on march 26, 1766. He set up shop on rue du faubourg-saint-antoine in his boutique, "la main d'or" (the golden hand).
his production included some louis xv-style furniture, but he was particularly fond of the transition and louis xvi styles.
he delivered numerous desks, chests of drawers, and secretaries crafted with talent, as evidenced by the piece presented here: an elegant lady's secretary, entirely inlaid.
it is original both in its size and in the richness of its inlaid decorations.
the flap features a trophy of musical instruments surmounted by a drape and intertwined trimmings.
under the flap, two doors are decorated with marquetry featuring urn motifs.
the sides are richly decorated with bouquets of flowers in multiple types of veneer wood.
the frames are made of amaranth and rosewood.
the bronzes retain the luster of their original gilding, and the marble is white breccia.
very good condition, polished wax finish.
this piece has no stamp, but is attributed with certainty to this cabinetmaker, as the same piece with a stamp was sold at auction in 2007:
prestige sale: paintings, furniture, and works of art at couturier-nicolay, paris, sale of june 14, 2000,
