Offered here is a rare vintage ceramic milk pitcher hand painted by Theo Sicard. It depicts a shepherd boy carrying a lamb around his neck with the title, "Lou Bergie". Lou Bergie Le Berger is a shepherd character from French folklore. The pitcher is signed on the bottom T. Sicard (Theo).
In 1895, in Aubagne, France, ceramics maker Louis Sicard (known as 'The Father of Cicada") created the decorative cicada when the director of Les Tuileries de Marseille tile factory asked Louis to design a gift that he could present to his customers. Following his death in 1946, his original creation continued to be produced in the very same workshop by his two sons, Théo (1911-1970) and Georges (1904-1989) until 1970 when Theo passed away.
No chips, cracks, or unusual wear. There are two tiny spots on the opposite side from the character where the glaze was skipped during manufacturing. This pitcher stands 7" tall. The bottom measures 3 1/4" in diameter.
