A fascinating water color painted early in the career of Fred Ulhman (1901-1985), known as a painter, writer, and lawyer (born to a Jewish family in Stuttgart, Germany, but he moved to England in the 1930s). The painting is titled "Juan les Pins" and dated 1929; the name refers to the blue boat in the forefront of the picture. The scene includes more boats in red, and disturbed landscape, trees that look like they are blowing in the wind, and a storm-like sky--very expressive. Some websites refer to his art as quirky, naive, and having a distinctive palette--certainly true of this watercolor.

The painting has an off-white cardboard matt and is wrapped in plastic, which I didn't want to disturb (even though it's only held in place by masking tape on the back); the matt is a bit worn, especially at the corners, and a bit dirty. But the painting is excellent. The exposed area of the painting measures 7.75 inches by 6.5 inches (15" x 13" matted). I expect the painting to be signed somewhere behind the matting, but I did not want to damage anything by taking it apart to see. (Please note I do my best to ship carefully so any purchases arrive safely and quickly.)

The backside of the cardboard holding it together is a glued-on paper that identifies Fred Uhlman, London, England, the title ("Juan les Pins 1929"), the medium (watercolor), and the last sale price ($850 US). It was purchased by the father of a friend of mine, which I believe may be the handwritten name Lowenthal on the back (the Lowenthals' grandparents migrated from Germany around 1930, and were great collectors of Judaica).

Painter in oil of landscape, townscapes and still life with a slightly quirky, naïve appearance and employing a distinctive palette. Uhlman was born in Stuttgart, Germany, became a doctor of law and practised as a barrister 1927–33. He left Germany for Paris in 1933 and in 1934 began painting there as a self-taught artist. In 1936 he moved to London, where married, and where he soon established his reputation as a painter. Although he lived in London, he spent summers in the Croesor Valley, Gwynedd, Wales. Uhlman had his first one-man show in 1935 at the Galerie Le Niveau, Paris; his first solo show in London was at the Zwemmer Gallery, in 1938. From then on Uhlman showed regularly, one-man exhibitions and mixed shows throughout Britain. A retrospective was held at Leighton House, London, in 1968. less
