Ancestor paintings were first seen being made during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). They embody the celebration of deceased family members. Most of the time they come in pairs of a man and a woman.
This pair of framed ancestor paintings has been painted on silk and has been matted with a silk brocade. The portraits are framed in a simple, gilded, wooden frame, which let the detailing of the paintings shine.
Both the man and the woman in these paintings are presented frontally seated in carved wooden chairs draped with embroidered scarves. Both are wearing elaborately embroidered brocade robes and headwear. The expression on their faces is serene and calm.
