Contemporary interpretation of “Wakashima Gonemon Swimming Underwater” by Taiso Yoshitoshi. Signed and dated in front lower right corner by artist E. Butler.
The original image is from a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints titled "Tales of the Floating World on Eastern Brocade (Azuma no nishiki ukiyo kôdan)" by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi published from 1867-8 by Masudaya Ginjiro. In this series, popular stories (kôdari) of drama and violence from various sources were retold by Kanagaki Rôbun, whose text appears in the top right corner of the composition. Wakashima Gonemon dives into a whirlpool to retrieve an ancient dragon-headed bell at the bottom of the Sumida river. According to the text in the piece, the Water (or Dragon) God was unwilling to part with the old bell, the rope broke and the bell is still there at the bottom of the river; hence the origin of the term Kanegafuchi (bell deep).

The Chairish Buyer Guarantee ensures that you have complete peace of mind when
making a purchase on Chairish, in the event that your item:
- Does not arrive

- Prior to shipping or local pickup, buyers may cancel an order for any reason, with the exception of some Made-to-Order items, where supplies have been purchased or work begun on the item.
- Please notify us within 24 hours of purchase if you would like to cancel an order, as prompt cancellation will reduce the likelihood that you will incur return shipping charges.

- Chairish Express In-Home deliveries are currently only offered for international cross-border shipments.

- Deliveries can take anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks to be delivered.
- Chairish Freight Delivery
- Delivered in a crate, to your front door.
- You will need tools and/or equipment to open the crate.

- Chairish Freight deliveries can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.
- Only available in selected markets.
- Chairish In-Home Delivery
