Designer Marco Zanuso significantly contributed to the evolution of Italian design through his unique approach to living design, products, and materials, distancing from traditional and classic concepts and embracing research and experimental study. He is one of the major Italian Designers from the 20th Century period together with architects Mario Bellini, Tobia Scarpa, Vico Magistretti, Cini Boeri, Gio Ponti, and many others. He graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1939 with a degree in Architecture and opened his design firm in Milan in 1945. He later becomes the editor of well-established design magazines Domus and Casabella. He was among the first to experiment with new materials such as foam and latex. He won different design awards with his exceptional furniture pieces such as the Lady Chair where he abandoned the use of springs to welcome experimental materials such as foam rubber, used on products such as the 1949 Antropus chair and the 1951 Sleep-o-matic sofa. In 1957 he partnered with German designer Richard Sapper. He designed a very successful children's stackable chair (k4999) for Kartell, made of non-reinforced plastic, a light and functional piece which contributed to the broad use of plastic as a material used to create furniture and accessories for the home. Zanuso and Sapper were later hired by Brionvega and they designed a series of televisions and radios as well as the ‘Grillo’ telephone for Siemens (1966) one of the first phones which had the dial and the ear system in the same unit. His works were research to create products for the home and living which were reachable by a broad audience because they were functional and accessible. Some of his other works include the Lambda Chair for Gavina and the Martingala Chair.
