Exceptional and remarkably substantial antique European copper cauldron or utility vessel, weighing approximately 10.5 pounds, with traditional dovetailed copper construction and a massive forged-iron bail handle. Personally acquired by the current owner circa 1999–2001 at the historic antiques and flea market along the Dijver canal in Bruges, Belgium.

This impressive vessel measures approximately 16.5–17 inches in diameter × 11 inches high, with an overall height of 20 inches when the iron handle is upright.

The craftsmanship is particularly noteworthy. The heavy copper body displays traditional dovetailed joining techniques, with the distinctive joined seam clearly visible vertically along the body as well as around the circumference of the bottom. A broad reinforced copper rim surrounds the vessel, while large riveted copper mounting plates support the substantial forged-iron swing handle.

One handle plate bears the original incised/stamped markings “40” over “B.” The exact significance of these markings and the identity of the original maker have not been established.

The copper retains a beautiful naturally aged surface in deep brown and bronze tones with areas of green verdigris. Hammer marks, oxidation, scratches, dents, irregularities and evidence of its long utilitarian life remain visible throughout.

The vessel has intentionally not been polished or restored, preserving the wonderful patina, construction details and character acquired over its long life.

Based on its traditional dovetailed copper construction, forged-iron fittings and overall craftsmanship, the vessel is believed to date to the late 19th to early 20th century and to have originated in Continental Europe. Its precise original function is unknown; substantial copper vessels of this type were historically produced for a variety of household, agricultural and commercial uses.

Today, it is a striking sculptural antique in its own right. Its generous scale makes it particularly well suited as a fireplace log or kindling holder, large cachepot or planter, blanket container, or simply as a statement piece in a European, French Country, rustic or collected interior.

Condition

Good antique condition consistent with considerable age and its original utilitarian purpose. The vessel retains substantial natural patina with oxidation, verdigris, dents, scratches, discoloration, surface irregularities and wear throughout. These characteristics are consistent with the age and history of the piece and contribute to its character.

The copper has not been polished or restored. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the dovetailed construction around the bottom, vertical body seam and original “40 / B” markings.
