Framed beautifully in a gold-tone frame, this signed original oil painting by American-born listed artist Ray Swanson (1937-2004) is on … Read more Framed beautifully in a gold-tone frame, this signed original oil painting by American-born listed artist Ray Swanson (1937-2004) is on linen depicting a scenic landscape of mountains overlooking a lake set in the American West. A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the American Watercolor Society from 1986 to 2004, Ray Swanson was known for his Southwest Native American subject, the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, and Apache Indians. He was especially known for his realistic depictions of children and smaller animals belonging to these tribes and for the beauty of their traditional costumes. Swanson won a gold medal from the National Academy of Western Art in 1975. His work was added to the collection of the Phippen Museum in Prescott. The artist's signature is present on the bottom left corner of the frame.

The way Swanson plays with the softer atmosphere is by juxtaposing dark, diagonal lines, therefore abstracting the mountains, creating something special in this painting. It's this bold choice and risk that makes the painting an exceptional piece.
