Three generations of women, resting … more This oil painting on hardboard is a scene in Tlacolutla de Matomoros, state of Oaxaca. Three generations of women, resting in a quiet corner of the busy market day. People from nearby villages and farms come to buy and to sell. They buy things that they can't make themselves, such as cooking oil. Every sort of thing is sold. There are t.ables of sundries, such as batteries, knives, plates and bowls. There are individual women seated on the ground with blankets displaying produce from their gardens. The once a week Sunday markets are for socializing as well as commerce.The women rest by a bright, orange painted wall. The Mexican color palette favors bright colors, and walls in primary and secondary colors of pink, orange, yellow, blue, or green are common. The two adult indigenous women wear traditional dress, as do most of the indigenous women. For market day they have woven colorful ribbons into their braids. Their clothes are made locally. Elaborate decorated aprons, or pinafores, are part of the worn everyday attire. The community is prosperous due to community ownership of a dam that provides irrigation in a region were the rainy season only lasts there months.

The painting is signed Carlos Williams, one of several pseudonyms the artist favors. The painting is mounted in a vintage frame of dark wood. He has painted a way of life that has lasted for many generations, dating back to the arrival of the Spanish, and still survives today. less
