Rug folds don't look particularly advantageous. They occur during rug manufacture when the weft threads are beaten up unevenly or when the knotting frames are assembled and disassembled several times. This happens especially when the knotted rug is not given the same tension, which is often seen in rugs made by wandering nomads.
