The original structure was the base for an oil lamp. Standing lamps such as this with exquisite carving at the base have been in use in fine mansions in China since the 17th century. This is a 19th century version. The base is very elaborately carved on botb sides, complete with verticulated spandrels. The subject matter is a lady dressed in traditional robes Her flying sleeves and scarves indicate she is an immortal, recognized by Chinese folklore as a protector of the house.
The lamp has replacement parts - notably the lamp shade, rectangular base and the standing rod. The lamp shade is made of modern material replacing the paper lantern that was easily burned.
The lamp was found in a furniture market in Southern China, but it has a northern origin.
The lamp is fully electrified and fitted with a long cord with a foot pedal control. The work was done by Le Esther Lamp Shop of Kenosha WI.

This standing lamp was sourced in Southern China. When we found it, it was a lamp base, with the beautiful carving of an ethereal maiden and matched with a lamp shade made in traditional style. It was meant to be used as an oil lamp. It was cleaned and revarnished before shipment to the US. Then it was sent to a Lamp Shop where the pros were able to drill into the rod and thread a wire through. The work was done according to code and it is now an electric lamp.
