Cristall was unusual in being primarily a figure painter, his compositions being distinct among his contemporaries for focusing on the human figure. His work is also celebrated for a pleasing simplicity and ‘broad’ painting style.This charming composition shows Cristall's affection for rustic subjects; a mother and child are pictured at rest, presumably taking a break from labour in the fields, the mother reclining on a stack of hay and looking heavenwards, as if in languid reverie or dignified contemplation.Provenance: From the Collection of Dr E.M.
