An original c.1819 watercolour painting, James Hamilton Stanhope, Heidelberg Castle from the Neckar, Germany.A wonderful sepia ink and wash drawing … Read more An original c.1819 watercolour painting, James Hamilton Stanhope, Heidelberg Castle from the Neckar, Germany.A wonderful sepia ink and wash drawing by Lt Col James Hamilton Stanhope (1788–1825) dating from around 1819. Stanhope fought extensively in Europe during the Peninsular War and was one of fewer than thirty survivors out of 400 at the Battle of Waterloo. The drawing shows the majestic castle at Heidelberg, sited on the northern part of the Königstuhl hillside above the town.The signature accompanying Stanhope's sketches (pictured for information only) matches that on a hand-signed engraving of Stanhope in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D20616). The sketches were in the collection of Stanhope's son, James Banks Stanhope (1821–1904)—see photo of bookplate.with scratching out and white bodycolour highlights. On buff-coloured paper.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and in some cases an accompanying text or artist biography.
