Dora Maar is the pseudonym of Henrietta Theodora Markovitch (Paris 1907 - 1997). Shrouded in the monumental shadow of Picasso, she has long been - and reductively - known as her lover and muse, famous as the Crying Woman, the subject of a series of paintings by Picasso that immortalize her in her fragility. But Dora Maar was much more than that: a very talented painter and photographer, poet, politically engaged intellectual and active in the Parisian artistic avant-gardes of the 1930s. In 1995 the first major retrospective of photographs and paintings (Fundación Bancaixa) was set up in Valencia, but her work was rediscovered and re-evaluated only after her death. In 2006, her home (the Dora Maar House) in Ménerbes opened as a retreat for writers, scholars and artists as part of a program run by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. There are numerous publications dedicated to her, as well as her exhibitions. Among the most recent and institutional: 2001-2 Dora Maar & Picasso, Haus der Kunst, Munich; Dora Maar: Bataille, Picasso et les Surréalistes, Center de la Vieille Charité, Marseille; Dora Maar: photography, Picasso y lossurrealistas, Center Cultural Tecla Sala, Barcelona. 2014 Dora Maar. Despite Picasso, Palazzo Fortuny, Venice. 2019-2020 Dora Maar, Center Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
