moreIf you love folk art and crafts as much as we do, then we offer this amazing volume for you to consider for yourself or as a gift for a good friend. It's an exhaustive survey of American design from colonial days to the end of the 19th century. Figureheads, weather vanes, cigar store Indians, furniture, to name just a few from thousands of items are represented in beautiful detail. Just as fascinating is the story behind the book: during the Great Depression, the WPA hired hundreds of artists and assigned each a specific region of the country, covering 35 states, and had them find the best and most representative work of that region. The artists then produced water color or tempera renderings of their finds which were then housed in the National Gallery of Art as the Index of American Design. Originally published in 2 volumes, this single volume edition contains over 2900 illustrations including 800 in full color. It's the most comprehensive account available of this wonderful and historic project. In near mint condition. Treasury of American Design by Clarence P. Hornung.
