The Vajolet Towers
cm65 x cm85 (unframed) - oil on panel
Walter Wellenstein (1898 Dortmund - Berlin 1970) He studied with Emil Orlik at the Berlin art school from 1918 to 1924. His early works are characterized by travel memories and views of the city. In the 1930s, he developed a passion for depicting artistic and bizarre masks and characters. Many of his works show traits of the grotesque - Wellenstein's artistic means of overcoming the instability of time. In the 1950s Wellenstein was inspired by theater rehearsals and created theatrical scenarios in paintings with emphasized outlines. These paintings often show influences from works by Karl Hofer, Max Beckmann, James Ensor and Alfred Kubin.
