A most impressive large scale bronze Khmer Singha temple guardian lion with beautifully aged verdigris patina.
A superb example, the fearsome mythical beast depicting an ornate, highly stylized male lion form, stoic stance, standing upright on all four with muscular well defined full body, forward facing head held high, aggressive glare with whimsical bulging eyes, mouth ajar with teeth exposed, ears erect, flaming mane with jagged silhouette and wavy incised ornamentation, richly decorated and intricately detailed throughout, all in a beautifully aged green patina.
Most likely born in Cambodia or Thailand, late 19th / early 20th century, the exceptionally executed high quality cast bronze Southeast Asian architectural ornament originally intended to serve both as greeter and defender, protecting the temple while chasing away evil spirits!
Dimensions: (approx)
34"h, 17.5"w, 24"d
Background/History:
This stunning specimen possibly one of a pair placed flanking the main approach to the sanctuary at the center of a traditional Khmer temple, but they were also used throughout the temple complex, placed along the base of stairways, on terraces and around the moat. Depending on the size and wealth of the ancient temple, the guardian could be placed singly, in pairs, or in larger groups.
The lion, representing royalty, strength, and courage, was the personal symbol of the Khmer kings, who were believed to be Gods as well. Therefore, the lion as guardian of the sacred precinct suggested the ability to ward off evil through both divine and royal protection.
With its origins dating to the 9th to 13th centuries, the dvarapala statue was a door - entry - gate guardian often portrayed as a warrior or fearsome giant. During that period it was a widespread architectural element throughout Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina cultures, as well as in areas influenced by them like Java. Predated by the Chinese guardian lions or foo dogs, who have been found in religious art as early as 208 BC., although the form of the Chinese guardian lion was quite varied during its early history in China, the appearance, pose, and accessories of the lions eventually became standardized and formalized during the Ming (c.1368-1644) and Qing (c.1636–1912) dynasties into its present form.
Great quality and overall condition, especially considering its age. Strong, sturdy, and stable, the statue presents well, enhanced by weathered verdigris green patina.
Wear consistent with age, including heavily patinated spots - light and dark hues, scattered oxidation, tarnish, losses, old restorations, small drilled holes, nothing that detracts from the aesthetics, but only add to the charming rustic warmth, sophisticated cultural interest and rich antique character that can only be aquired over long periods of time.
