It features … Read more A late 18th-century French landscape painting, depicting an Arcadian landscape with a bridge and animals by the river. It features a strong composition set by the vertical of the trees set against the lines of the bridge and the shadow of the tree. The scene is set in a warm light, with the blue of the sky contrasting beautifully with the terracotta of the rocks and architecture and the green of nature. The rendering of the vegetation is particularly pleasing, with a lot of attention paid to the vibrant details of the leaves, and the form of the tree on the right-hand side echoing the shape of the clouds. This landscape is softened by pastoral elements, with a cow, sheep and a goat drinking by the river, alongside a human figure next to the bridge. The unfinished state of the painting adds a gorgeous interest to it, in contrast with more detailed areas. A rare and wonderful work, complemented by a giltwood frame. Led by painters such as Jean-Victor Bertin or Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, French landscape painting in the late 18th century upholds the tradition of the Neoclassical landscape with harmonious lines and an Italian inspiration, and adds to it a strong element of realism, replacing the mythological figures of the latter by everyday pastoral tasks.
