The cabinet has a well-defined crown with an exceptionally rare Greek Key carving below the cove. The cabinet has paneled Cherry doors, often referred to as blind doors, with two interior shelves. The base cabinet has a rare 3 over 3 layout with select cuts of Cherry used for the faces. The feet were superbly executed with a nice scrolling pattern and dramatic carved spurs. We’re extremely ardent about Connecticut furniture and truly feel it’s one of the most underrepresented schools of early American cabinetry. Yale, Historic Deerfield, and the Five Colleges probably hold the best Connecticut furniture collections but outside of New England you’ll rarely see Connecticut furniture on display. The work surface has a set of hand cut dovetails on display and the doors are peg joined. The cabinet has pine secondaries and is in wonderful condition with our only notes being minor surface wear, a small piece of wood missing on the left side right below the mid molding, & the brasses were replaced with period accurate pulls. The script on the backboard is most likely the name of the original owner and shows this was made for a home in Chatham MA, a prominent fishing, shipping, and whaling town on the cape. This is without a doubt one of the finest Connecticut Chippendale cabinets that has surfaced in recent years. We'll surely be handling more expensive and sophisticated furniture but this one really got us excited because it's a unique example of 18th century coastal Connecticut Chippendale furniture. The cabinet measures 47 1/4” wide x 19 3/4” deep x 75 1/2” tall. See less
