Original 1947 emily isabel fern (1881-1953) 'ceres autumn' south africa oil painting
this is just a great original piece. When I got the painting, I knew very little about the artist. The one thing I did know was she was known for her wonderful works from south africa. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included her biography below. This is a wonderful original work of the town of ceres in south africa during autumn. Ceres is known for its deciduous fruit trees and this is exactly what they look like in fall. Oil on canvas board measuring 16 x 20 inches. Signed and dated lower left. Painting is in very good condition. Clean with just some minor surface grime. There are a few very small flecks of paint loss but otherwise very good. The 2 upper corners show some minor loss and cracking to the board. Nothing too bad but you can definitely see it. When I got the painting, the back was covered with the original paper. As I usually do, I tore it off to see if anything was underneath. Goldmine! Painting is titled in what most likely is the artist's hand. It also has an original stamp from some sort of exhibition from museu nacional de belas artes rio de janeiro brasil. It also has the artist's address in johannesburg where it was sent back from someone in brazil. Really just a wonderful history on the back of the painting. Original white frame is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 21 x 25 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from a gallery that sells the artist's work reads: "born ballarat, australia, 1881; died johannesburg, 1953. Fern arrived in johannesburg as a child in 1890, and was taught oil painting by a nun at end street convent. From 1899 to 1904 her parents lived in port elizabeth where she had art tuition at the technical college. Returning to johannesburg, she was then taught pastel drawing by george smithard. As one of the first students at the johannesburg school of art, she became a foundation member of the jsc in 1916, and worked with amshewitz. Like other women members of emergent art societies, she engaged herself in craftwork, making and selling items in leather, pewter and brass repousse. She combined this with giving art lessons at the protea studio in market street. From 1920 to 1922 she studied at the slade school in london, and on her return travelled to natal and to the cape on sketching trips. She taught at the wits technical college art school from 1926 to 1930. In 1933 she went to paris, where she studied in the studio of andre lhote. His figurative variant of cubism impacted on her painting style. Fern played an active role in the artistic life of johannesburg for nearly 50 years, exhibiting her work with societies in the rest of sa, including sasa in cape town.."
