Antique pearlware cachepot with a pebble finish, engine turned collar and scalloped rim. Hole in the base for drainage. Measures 6 1/4" diameter x 5 1/8" tall. Good condition - faint interior hairline does not detract. Provenance: Jonathan Rickard Collection. Rickard is author of "Mocha and Related Dipped Wares".
Pearlware root pot or flower stand with unsmoothed 'terra tersia' pebbled decoration, made in Staffordshire or Yorkshire circa 1795 - 1800. Part of the surface is roughened with small particles of brown and white clay. Terra-tersia decoration is achieved as a veneer of turners’ waste; i.e. shavings from a variety of processes involving the horizontal lathe, rolled into a flat, thin sheet and applied to the pot body in the unfired state. Probably Wood & Caldwell.
