Antique Chinese Scholar or Immortal Worshiping, Kneeling Reading? (Tao Scroll)
I believe this to be an antique Chinese porcelain figure of a Scholar or possibly an Immortal, likely dating from the 1930s or earlier.
The figure is hand-painted with enamel details and is seat-ed, wearing a white vest with a molded lotus design on the back. According to reference, similar items are identified as Qing Dynasty pieces and are made of bisque porcelain with a glaze over certain parts. There has been some minor wear on the pained face which did not appear to be glazed.
Whatever the figure was holding in the past is now lost.
In order to give him something to hold, we have machine copied and made a small scroll of the first page of the Tao in Chinese and a another of the Heart Sutra in Japanese because we initially thought the figure was made in Japan. Note that most of the photos taken with the larger Heart Sutra scroll. We will include both scrolls. They are NOT original to the figurine.
The figure measures:
2 ¼ inches high X 1 5/8inches at widest 1 3/8 inches deep
Wooden stand measures:
7/8 inches high x 2 1/8 inches wide
Condition: The figurine shows minor loss of paint from age. There is loss of the missing piece of whatever the fellow was once holding. When I wiped the base of the figurine, most of the sticker with the number there came off. The wood plat-form / stand has paper residue on the top. Overall, in very good condition.
