Jerome Martin (American, 1926 - 2017) oil painting on board of a court jester with old man. Framed under glass in original French frame. Measures 16 3/4" x 12 3/4" overall. Signed upper left. Dates from the late 1940's / early 1950's.
Jerome Martin studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1946 and 1947 after World War II and holds a BA and MFA from New York University. Martin lived in Greenwich Village from 1940 through 1980 at the heart of the City's arts community. He worked extensively as an Ashcan School painter and illustrator of magazines including "Fortune" and literary works like Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men" and Charles Jackson's "The Lost Weekend".
