A 19th century Black Forest jardinière hand carved of solid walnut in the Alsace region of France, circa 1870s. The detailed, intricately carved wood planter features a realistic hand carved basket weave background with a center cartouche and floral and foliate motifs including hand carved roses and acanthus leaves. The sides and back are also carved, making it perfect to float in the room. Raised on four bobbin legs joined with an "H" stretcher. This elegant, Black Forest jardiniére or planter is a wonderful example of the master artisanry of the region.
The Black Forest is actually located in a triangular area that borders Germany, France, and Switzerland and it extends along the Rhine River. Wood carving has been a traditional cottage industry in the region since the beginning of the 1800s. Black Forest carvings became a symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe.
