Signed lower right, 'C. Rungius' for Carl Rungius (German-American, 1869-1959) and titled, verso, 'Montana Landscape VIII'.
Displayed in an ebony painted and gilt-wood frame. Framed dimensions: 13H x 16W x 1.5D inches.
Born in Germany, Carl Rungius immigrated to the United States at the age of twenty-five and became one of America's most noted wildlife artists, usually working directly from nature. His grandfather was a taxidermist and animal hunter, which gave him early exposure to his eventual subject matter. From his early childhood, Carl Rungius was also an avid hunter of big game and eventually his chosen lifestyle merged with his art.
Rungius first studied art at the Berlin School of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts, and, later, at the School of Applied Arts where one of his teachers was Paul Meyerheim. His career as a painter began in Berlin in 1889, and much of his early work comprised genre paintings and landscapes in the prevailing style of German Romanticism and Realism. He arrived in the United States in 1894, and settled in New York City. He initially illustrated for popular magazines but, by 1904, was focused on his career as a fine artist. In 1913, he was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design and, in 1920, to full membership.
In 1895, Rungius took his first trip West, heading to Wyoming and Yellowstone. He spent nearly four months on a ranch in northwest Wyoming where "he gained the first true inspirations for his life's work of depicting western life and animals" (Hassrick, p.124). Much of his subsequent painting and hunting career, over a period of fifty years, was spent mule-packing into the forests and high country of Montana, Wyoming, Arizona and the Canadian Rockies. His particular specialty became studies of native wild animals in their natural habitat including goats, sheep, deer, and antelope often shown in majestic, mountainous settings.
Over the course of a long and successful career, Rungius exhibited widely and with success including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1905-1906, 1914-1934), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915), the Salmagundi Club (1922-1923), the National Academy of Design (1898-1920, 1925-1926, 1929), the California Art Club (1938) and the Golden Gate International Exposition (19396). He was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including from the Salmagundi Club, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and, from the National Academy of Design, the Ellen P Speyer Memorial Award, Carnegie Prize (1926) and Saltus Prize. Among his prominent patrons was President Theodore Roosevelt who became a great admirer and collector of his work.
