Justin McCarthy (American 1891 - 1977) folk art still life oil painting of sea shells on a faux bois ground. Presented in original frame. Measures 20 1/8" wide x 16 3/4" tall. Good condition. Signed lower right.
McCarthy was a self-taught American artist living in Pennsylvania. His work is held in many important collections including the American Folk Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Petullo Collection, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The New York Times has praised his "paintings and drawings of gestural force and narrative interest." McCarthy's imagery anticipates the Pop art of the 1960s.
