moreFabulous portable coffee or cocktail table by inventor, Robert Karoff of NY. Patented in 1959, Karoff's design is carried out in this walnut veneer over MDF folding table that features steel splayed legs on a pivoting center bolt and a collapsible top. It is very sturdy and only 30" in diameter. Perfect for small spaces! Stands approx 17" from floor. The finish is in very good condition! Beautiful grain and depth.
Only a few tiny edge chips and some tiny fissures in the veneer. No stains or eyesores. I just sanded and repainted the gold legs as they had some oxidation. The top is freshly waxed. If you study the blueprints, you will notice the center eyelet handle is no longer in place. I think it was lobbed off when this table took a permanent position in the home. I was able to recreate the original carry loop with a brass eyebolt so this will be delivered looking like the blue print! See the 2nd pic as it looks restored!
Karoff's obituary calls him a folding furniture inventor. Besides a second print for this table in wood legs, the only other furniture patent is a folding metal bar cart of which there are many turning up in my search. I could find no other folding tables like this with either leg form. I am not going to say it's rare but definitely will be hard to find another example. This table does retain the Karoff Originals label.
Karoff was famous for hostess gifts and many items will be labeled with his brand. Early on he formulated perfumes and sold them in bottles he designed, similar to the whimsical Avon bottles people collect. He also did some portable barware sets, serving items and more. There are a slew of patents in his name including a method of cutting and frying carrots into a chip which was patented in the 1980's. An interesting man and a fabulous table design!
