Burns is recognized as one of the most prominent church architects of the late 19th and early 20th century. His works include over 50 churches as well as a number of Victorian mansions in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
As a painter Burns was known for religious, literary and genre subjects. He exhibited for a number of years both at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the National academy of Design in New York.
