Juan Guzman-Maldonado is a Chilean Postwar & Contemporary painter who was born in 1948.
He moved to California in 1972. Previously influenced by Fauvism and Expressionism in his object and non-objective painting, Juan Pepe Guzman-Maldonado began painting the California landscape, en plein air, very early in the morning sunrise or evening right before sunset. He cites Charles Reiffel, Maurice Braun and Charles Fries as influences. Guzman is known for his strong use of color and light and is influenced by both his Chilean background and California roots. Listed in Edan Hughes, "Artists in California". He began painting with his fingers and realized that objects performed better than the paint brush. His Fauvist palette became heavy and colors abstracted from the sun were moved from canvas onto masonite board, creating timeless imagery. Guzman uses heavy, impasto applications of paint with an influence of Fauvism and Expressionism in this impressionistic work. Guzman-Maldonado lives in Ventura and exhibits primarily in Southern California, with his work being collected world wide. See less
