Matsubara has held several numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, New York, USA (1993); Winter Dreams — The Story of Water at Spazio Lightbox, Venice, Italy (2011); and Repetition at the Blueproject Foundation in Barcelona, Spain (2014). His work has also appeared in group exhibitions such as Innovation/Imagination: 50 Years of Polaroid Photography Ansel Adams Center for Photography, San Francisco, USA (1999); and Archetype of Photography, Froese, Matsubara, Przyborek at the Laznia Center for Contemporary Art, Gdansk, Poland (2010). His work is part of the public collections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, USA; and La Maison du Livre, de l’Image et du Son, La Bibliotheque de Villeurbanne, Lyon, France.
