This is a portrait sculpture bust of a flapper woman. The sitter was Frances Widney, (Mrs. Robert Gump of the San Francisco family who owned Gump's Department stores). This auction is for the sculpture and th accompanying items. It came accompanied by vintage silver gelatin photograph photos (minor wear) of the piece as well as two books (wear) and an original letter from the artist to the sitter as well as some vintage clippings. They are all included.
Boris LOVET-LORSKI, Lithuanian-American (1894-1973) Art Deco modern artist known for his sculpture, lithography, drawing and painting. He studied architecture and sculpture at the Imperial Academy of Art in St. Petersburg 1914-16 with Gugo Zaleman. He worked as an architect in Russia until 1920, when he immigrated to the United States, living first in Boston and then moving to New York City, He moved to Paris, France 1926-32 and then Los Angeles, California 1932-34. He was successful enough to maintain studios in New York, Rome, and Paris. He travelled all over the world collecting unusual and exotic types of stone, amassing his collection of Belgian black and white Carrara marble, lava, jade and onyx blocks. He synthesized Art Deco, Modernism, Tribal and Oriental influences, He carved Sculpture portrait busts of four American presidents, A bronze bust of the late President John F. Kennedy at Brandeis University, Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. For the City of Paris in 1949 a monumental bust of Charles DeGaulle, notables such as Toscanini and Albert Schweitzer, as well as of members of the royal families in Greece and Italy ans many high society figures. He was inspired by the nude human figure. He was known for the highly polished surfaces of his exoctic nudes and stylized dogs and horses.
He is best known for his Art Deco work, art style of the 1920s and 1930s, A style based on machine-inspired geometric design and modern materials such as steel, chrome, glass and a style of machine-inspired geometry. It was a stylistic successor and reaction to the popular Art Nouveau style of flowing, non geometric lines. Examples of Art Deco architecture are New York's Chrysler Building and Radio City Music Hall. Art Deco sculptors include Boris Lovet-Lorski, Jaques Adnet, Karl Hagenauer, Demetre Chiparus and Wilhelm Diederich, and representative painters and poster artists are John McCrady and Louis Icart. Tiffany, Lalique and Edgar Brandt all crafted pieces. Helen Dryden did fashion illustrations for Vogue magazine, which reflected a changing era embodying both Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Erte, Romain de Tirtoff is credited with helping define the new Art Deco look because of his magazine cover designs for Harper's Bazar, beginning 1915. The 1925 Paris L'Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris was credited with launching the design rage for Art Deco.
