Large abstract oil on canvas painting primarily in black, blue and red, 30" by 48", unframed, titled on reverse "Back … Read more Large abstract oil on canvas painting primarily in black, blue and red, 30" by 48", unframed, titled on reverse "Back in Time", signed there and dated "1987-90" by noted American 20th century contemporary artist CASS SHAW. Shaw, based currently in the Los Angeles area, has had wide exposure of her work, the exhibition history in the United States and France going back to the 1970's. This is one of two works I acquired by the artist (they were acquired at the same time). A soft cover exhibition booklet in color from 2002, signed and inscribed by the artist, MAY BE included in the sale of this painting; temporarily misplaced and I am looking for it. It shows the variety of generally abstract subject matter the artist has mastered. See online for a summary of her long gallery exhibition history, including a 2011 show of her work at Continental Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. This painting appears to be in excellent condition. There is some white area in the black portion that could be interpreted as splitting of the paint as it dried but from comparison to her other works in the book, it appears that this is likely to be the artist's dry scumbling or scraping technique on the intentionally dry, sandy/gritty surface. Overall a very sharp and stylish contemporary painting. See less
