Fine pair of flint enamel, Rockingham glazed figures of opposing poodles. Attributed to Lyman Fenton & Company, Bennington, Vermont, 1849-1858. The full-bodied figure of a standing poodle with applied coleslaw mane and ears.
Each carrying a basket containing grapes and apples, the rim applied with "moss". Measure 8.5" tall x 9.5" long x 4" deep.
Good condition - one with missing toes on the rear foot as part of the original production - glazed over completely. As made in 1850. This pair displays beautifully.
Literature: Richard Carter Barret, "Bennington Pottery and Porcelain," page 286, pl. 368. An identical poodle in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City on display in the American Wing.
