Catalogued by Connie W. Lembark with an introduction by Ruth E. Fine. Includes 383 color plates, 141 duotones and 3 black-and-white illustrations.

Sam Francis was the first of the postwar American painters to reach international recognition. He had gone to Paris on the GI Bill in 1950, and his work was soon receiving growing in Europe and Japan as well as the United States. His highly personal style of spontaneous, immediate application of paint to canvas and paper gave rise to a new French term which was soon internationalized: "tachtisme," in affect the art of spots and stains. Through the slowly evolving styles of Francis' work in the intervening decades, his art has been characterized by controlled accidents carefully contained within the highly personalized imagery he created.
Remarkably, Francis has been able to transfer this same combination of spontaneous gesture and signature abstract forms to the graphic media, which appear to be as intuitive and direct for him as painting.
The Prints of Sam Francis catalogues and fully documents every work in the graphic media by this master, including 300 lithographs and 125 etchings as well as screenprints and posters
