This " Basquiat and the Bayou " rare first edition Jean Michel Basquiat hardcover exhibition art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with laminated cover boards is published by Del Monico Books / Prestel Verlag Munich London New York. Printed in Hong Kong in 2014 on the occasion of the exhibition " Basquiat and the Bayou " at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, Louisiana. It features a monograph survey of the artworks of the artist Jean Michel Basquiat, with accompanied compelling text by author Franklin Sirmans.
Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street Graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art held a major retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and married text and image with Abstraction and Figuration. Basquiat's works has strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
Basquiat made his first voyage to New Orleans for The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1988. He was struck by the city's culture and unabashed Joie de Vivre. It is said that he was moved by the sight of The Mississippi River. Such enraptured first-time visitors often become drawn there time and again, but this was fated to be Basquiat's only trip. He died later that year. Like the artist himself, Basquiat's work had seen very little of The South. And although he remained apprehensive of the dark side of the southern history, New Orleans was humbled to welcome him to their hometown once more in this exhibition, if only in spirit.
This body of work, which explores the space and place of The Deep South, is emblematic of concerns that preoccupied Basquiat. He recognized that The Mississippi River flowed through his veins and understood he must navigate its history to understand himself.
