The lavishness of the panoramic wallpaper by Zuber & Cie called Hindustan (printed using 1,265 woodblocks carved in 1807)
Panoramic "Hindoustan" of the prestigious Zuber manufacture in Rixheim.
This wallpaper created by the manufacture in 1807 presents a panorama of the Indian subcontinent. Hindustan is of an incredible richness of decoration as much by the diversity of the buildings, the animals and the scenes represented, it is a motionless journey that this panoramic offers us.
The Zuber factory, founded in 1790, is one of the most prestigious wallpaper manufactures known worldwide, its panoramas and wallpapers decorate many palaces, embassies, castles, such as the reception room for diplomats at the White House in Washington decorated at the instigation of Jacky Kennedy with "views of North America", but also museums, luxury brands have chosen these exceptional wallpapers.
Even today Zuber wallpapers are entirely made by hand with carved wooden planks, for Hindoustan they number 1265.
As originally, the panoramic scenery "The Hindustan" is printed "à la planche" with the 1265 antique woodblocks, carved in 1807 by the manufacturory's workers.
These boards are classified as Historical Monuments by the Ministry of Culture and are part of the French heritage.
The Zuber Manufactory is the last in the world to produce panoramic sceneries with woodblocks.
The perpetuation of this printing technique and the use of antique materials give Zuber's panoramic sceneries the status of a true work of art.
Mounted as the paper is laid down on canvas and stretched with a wooden gilt frame.
Zuber has been creating handmade wallpapers since 1797. It still adheres to its 200-plus-year-old tradition of producing wallpapers with original, 17th-, 18th-, and 19th century woodblocks, with some panoramas made up of more than 50 strips of paper and dozens of layers of color and each applied by hand.
